In order to take care of all the items to be disposed of responsibly, we took care to bring items in good condition to associations and second-hand stores. As for items in poor condition, we personally took them to the waste disposal center. This sorting process enabled us to get rid of unnecessary items, while concentrating on the essentials. At the same time, we identified items to donate or sell, creating a new space and a sense of lightness.

Once the clutter was out of the way, it was time to find storage solutions to suit the space. We opted for an ingenious approach, reusing the shelving already present in my client’s basement. However, to maximize the use of vertical space, we added a wall-mounted system featuring modular shelving and clothes rails for hanging hiking gear. We also explored options such as stackable transparent storage boxes and wall hooks to optimize every available square centimeter. The aim was to find solutions that were functional, aesthetically pleasing and easy to access, while adapting to the existing space.
3. Setting up the systems
Once we had selected our storage solutions, we began installing the shelving and wall system. By using the existing shelves and adding the new modular shelves, we created a clever layout that efficiently stored basement items. Clothes rails were strategically placed to hang hiking gear, freeing up shelf space. By organizing items by category and using clear containers for better visibility, we created a practical and aesthetically pleasing storage system.
Space optimization and efficient organization with a shelving system
To improve organization and optimize the space available in this room, we chose to position the shelves perpendicular to the wall, creating a shelving system. We kept the existing shelves in the cellar and didn’t need to add any new ones. Some items were already stored in boxes, but these were not ideal in terms of size. As a result, we installed additional transparent stacking boxes to optimize the space on each shelf and organize items by category.

To organize your tools conveniently in a cellar, I recommend the use of nestable bins. Start by sorting your tools into categories, to help you visualize your inventory and plan bin organization accordingly. Choose bins of different sizes to maximize space, and stack them easily. Opt for high-quality, strong and durable bins to ensure the safety of your tools.
For optimum accessibility, place frequently used tools in easily accessible bins at a comfortable height. Less frequently used tools can be stored in higher stackable bins or less accessible areas, such as top shelves. Organize bins by grouping similar tools together for easy retrieval and to maintain order.
