The basement is often a convenient storage space, but it can quickly become cluttered and disorganised if not regularly sorted and organised. That’s why it’s important to know how to effectively de-clutter and organise your cellar, to maximise its usefulness and minimise the stress and anxiety associated with a messy storage space.
As a professional home organizer, I have helped many people declutter and organize their cellars. As part of this process, I worked closely with my client to determine which items should be kept, donated or discarded. I also proposed storage solutions to optimise the available space. Over time, the cellar had become a storage area for all sorts of bulky and unnecessary items, making it difficult to access essential items.
Firstly, it can make it difficult to find important things that are stored in the cellar. It can also make it difficult to move around the cellar, increasing the risk of injury or accident. If the cellar is not well ventilated because of the clutter, it can encourage dampness and mould. This can damage stored items and affect the air quality in the house. Ultimately, a cluttered cellar can cause stress and anxiety for the inhabitants of the house, who may feel cramped and have no control over their environment. All in all, it is important to keep a cellar tidy and organised to avoid these problems and ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
As part of my intervention to help my client de-clutter and organise her basement, I used a practical and economical approach. I reused the boxes already in my client’s cellar and added a few extra boxes to optimise the available space.
To further improve the organisation of the cellar, I added a solid shelf to allow my client to store her items more efficiently. By combining the use of labelled storage boxes with a solid shelf, I helped my client maximise the use of her cellar space and make everything more easily accessible.
This practical and cost-effective approach allowed my client to de-clutter and organise her cellar without having to purchase expensive new equipment. By using existing resources efficiently, we were able to create a functional and organised storage space, which gave my client a renewed sense of control over her environment.
